People in Chorley will be able take part in a special ceremony to mark the handing over of the Olympic Flag to London for the 2012 games on Sunday.

While the Olympic team, including Chorley’s own Bradley Wiggins, continue unparalleled success in Bejing, plans are being put in place by Chorley Council to connect the borough to London 2012 by taking part in the flag raising ceremony.

A free day of Olympic sports is also being organised at All Seasons Leisure Centre and Clayton Green Sports Centre where people have a go at hockey, badminton, athletics and other events.

Councillor John Walker, Chorley Council’s Executive Member, (People), said: “We wanted to do something to mark the Olympic handover and we will be joining hundreds of other towns by hosting a special event.

“After watching the Olympics many people often say they would like to have a go at the events themselves but never get chance.

"This will offer them the chance to have a go and they may even take it up as a hobby.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to have some fun, learn new skills and celebrate the start of the build up to the London 2012 games.”

The activities, some led by ex-international athletes, will start from 11am in the morning and finish at 5pm.

An Olympic Flag, which will be sent to us from London will be raised at All Seasons Leisure Centre between 2.30pm and 3pm, and will fly proudly at the Town Hall next week.
