ROB Walker was the star for Euxton Villa as Mark McDonnell’s side started 2017 with a 3-1 victory against Turton.

The Runshaw Hall Lane side are third in the West Lancashire Football League Premier Division after the win.

Manager McDonnell, pictured, was impressed by the display.

He said: “It was a tough game against Turton as they are a very good side.

“It was a pretty even first half and Sean Gibbs who was returning from injury made a few good saves to keep it at 0-0 until half-time.

“In the second half we took the game to them and Rob Walker was great by scoring two goals and then setting up the other.”

Walker opened the scoring after 55 minutes when he attacked down the left flank and then slotted the ball into the bottom left corner past the keeper.

He turned the orchestrator for the next Villa goal as he ran into the box and was tripped.

Mike Galliers stepped up and put the ball beyond the keeper.

Turton had two half chances but strong defending and the efforts of Gibbs thwarted the visitors.

Walker burst into the box and made it 3-0 before Turton grabbed a consolation effort.

Villa will be looking to keep up their good start to the year when they take on Crooklands and Whitehaven in the next two matches.

McDonnell said: “We are away this week then home against Whitehaven and those are two games we will be looking to get six points.

“The league is our only focus after going out of the cup and I think the top three has to be our target.

“Longridge are running away with the league and we would have to catch Blackpool Wren Rovers if we want the runners-up spot.

“We still have to play them in the league so it could be possible but we will be battling it out with Fulwood Amateurs for third spot.”

Coppull United suffered a 4-0 defeat to Wren Rovers in the top flight while Daniel Cooper was at the double for Croston Sports Club in their Division Two win against Garstang Reserves.
