BURY remain top of the League, but only by points difference from Furness, after demolishing bottom club Chorley.

After two consecutive defeats against what one would consider to be inferior opposition, dramatic steps needed to be taken.

Club coach, Martin Freschini, and his assistant, Geoff Triggs, completely reshuffled the team and it obviously paid dividends.

The changes they made were to move Paul Quinlan from full-back to scrum-half, drop Dan Jones back to full-back, and bring in James Brown at stand-off.

Bury were strengthened by the fact that they were playing their best forward combination and this was to yield a penalty after three minutes, with the opposition deliberately collapsing the ruck.

It took Bury some considerable time to cross the line for a try, this was a fine passing move down the three-quarter line ending in left-wing Warren Bluer scoring an unconverted try.

Ten minutes later, Bury were to add to this when, after a scrum drive-out, Brown linked with Jones before charging over, helping Bury to go in at the break 13 points ahead.

The second half started quietly, and it took 20 minutes for this new combination of players to really gel, before the floodgates opened.

Bury were to score five tries in a 20 minute period, two of which were converted.

There were two tries which stood out; one from Quinlan from a Bury forward drive, and the other from Stefan Hargreaves.

This Saturday, the league programme is suspended to allow the Lancashire Cup competitions to take place.

Bury visit Birchfield, of St Helens, in the first round of the Lancashire Plate, kick-off 2.30pm.

Training continues for the first team every Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm at the club's Radcliffe Road ground.
