After a whirlwind start to the season, Chorley saw their hopes of an FA Cup run blown away by a Salford team, who denied the visitors space and time on the ball.

Chorley fell behind to a curiosity of a goal and then, after equalising, had defender Andy Russell sent off 20 minutes from time before finally bowing out to a last-minute strike.

In a dramatic second half spell, City were awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute for a foul by Jamie Vermiglio, but Aaron Grundy saved Steve Foster’s spot-kick.

Ten minutes later Salford did go in front. Although Grundy appeared to have made a safe catch from a Matt Cross free kick, the assistant referee indicated that the ball had already crossed the line.

Chorley drew level after 68 minutes from a cracking rising drive by Jack Dorney after Robertson had punched out a free kick.

A minute later Russell was sent off for his second booking but Chorley’s 10 men held their own in lively late exchanges and both Shelton Payne and Steve Flitcroft came close to putting them in front.

But just when a replay looked certain, a raking right-wing cross in stoppage time cleared the Chorley defence and Rhodri Giggs fired Salford into the next round.
