Chorley launched their season in tremendous style to record their biggest opening-day win in almost 40 years, since an 8-0 goal-feast against Matlock Town in 1971.
Woodley’s combative approach in the first 35 minutes gave no sign of the goal-glut to come but once the Magpies went two up just before the break the visitors were swept away by an avalanche of goals and it could easily have been more.
Dale Whitham bundled in a 38th minute corner and Jack Dorney added a second from a penalty on the stroke of half-time. The game was effectively over two minutes into the second half when Tom Ince stroked home the rebound after Whitham had struck a post. Then Shelton Payne raced clear on 54 minutes and teed up a simple finish for Dorney to make it four. After a quiet period with the Magpies in complete control, two late goals put the icing on Chorley’s cake to the delight of home fans in a crowd of 491. Dorney completed his hat-trick on 83 minutes with a thunderous spot-kick after Ince had been brought down and in the 90th minute Ince took advantage of a superb through pass to add Chorley’s sixth to make it a perfect start to the new era.
