Chorley were unlucky to be edged out by the odd goal in an enthralling match which fully merited the description end-to-end.

It was the Magpies' first visit to Kellamergh Park, where UniBond newcomers AFC Fylde cashed in on a controversial refereeing decision to go on to a 2-1 win.

In a lively opening Fylde dangerman Matt Walwyn forced Zac Hibbert into an excellent save.

The Chorley skipper Wayne Maden seemed to be brought down but referee Mr I Gittins allowed play to continue and ex-Chorley junior Michael Barnes ran off and scored.

The visiting players were still reeling when Matt Mahoney shot home to make it 2-0.

Lewis Edge then denied Steve Burke when the striker was sent clear but Chorley reduced the arrears when Lee Shillito converted a centre with a sweetly-struck volley.

As Chorley turned the screw, Edge had to turn over a long-range drive from Alex Porter and a powerful Stuart Howson header was booted off the Fylde line.

Manager Steve Waywell said: “The decision cost us the game and it was no consolation that the referee admitted his mistake.

"We caused Fylde a lot of problems once we had got back into the match and had enough chances to win.

“I felt we deserved an equaliser at least. The lads worked tremendously hard.

“The players are competing but it’s a fine line between winning and losing, especially when there are some iffy games.”
