The return of UniBond League football can’t come soon enough for Chorley's Steve Waywell and his squad.
The Magpies have been without a game for more than a month, since they beat Ossett Albion 3-2 on December 12, when skipper Wayne Maden scored the winner, his first goal for the club.
Chorley are hoping to get back in action with the visit of Clitheroe on Saturday if the Victory Park pitch has recovered from the ice and snow.
Several inches of snow on the Wakefield pitch ruled out last weekend’s scheduled fixture.
The Magpie manager has told his players to be ready to turn out twice a week when they resume the First Division North campaign and there are 21 games to fit in over the next 14 weeks, 10 of them at home.
“We have been training hard since the Ossett game and because we have no cup commitments the break could work in our favour,” he said.
“A lot of clubs will have cup ties as well as a backlog of league fixtures to catch up with, and some probably won’t have done much in the way of training.
“Winter postponements don’t do anybody any good, but if any good does come out of the enforced situation it could help mid-table sides like us who have just league games to play.
“It will be up to us to deal with the straightforward fixture list we’ve got for the rest of the season and get what we can out of it.
“The weather has given us the opportunity to get in there and use the springboard we’ve been given.”
Everyone at the club is hoping that the Victory Park pitch will be fit for Saturday and if not, for Garforth Town’s visit on January 23.
Waywell welcomed the UniBond League’s decision to allow clubs to agree on postponements the day before scheduled fixtures.
“If we get to know on a Friday that a match is off it allows us to make alternative arrangements to keep the lads in shape.
“Nobody wants to be kept hanging about on the day.”
The Chorley boss is naturally more interested in what happens during the second half of the season than what has gone before, but agrees the need to build on results.
“It’s what happens in the second half that is important. We need to start winning games and that takes a winning desire and of course a winning mentality.
“That’s what builds success and we need to do this when it comes down to tackling two games a week.
“We’ve got a great bunch of lads who don’t moan about what we put them through in training.
“They’ve got the club at heart and that’s the attitude we need to make progress.”
Chorley’s 10 home games see the visit of Clitheroe, Garforth Town, Leigh Genesis, Mossley, Lancaster City, Woodley Sports, Rossendale United, Radcliffe Borough, Bamber Bridge and Warrington Town.
Their 11 away matches are against Rossendale United, Bamber Bridge, Wakefield, Skelmersdale United, AFC Fylde, Ossett Albion, Leigh Genesis, Colwyn Bay, FC Halifax Town, Salford City and Trafford.
