CHORLEY’S 25 year wait to reach the first round of the FA Cup will go on after they were beaten by Northwich Victoria.

Having held the in-form Vics to a draw away on Friday the Magpies were confident of getting the better of a side two tiers below them in the football pyramid to secure a first round tie at home to Boreham Wood.

It’s the second year in a row Chorley have been in the hat for the first round draw, only to go and lose their fourth qualifying round replay.

Things were looking good at half-time at Victory Park, with Andy Bond’s free-kick putting Matt Jansen’s side 1-0 up.

Michael Roddy levelled from the spot early in the second half after a foul by Chorley captain Andy Teague, and Abou Sanogo scored the winner ten minutes from time.

“It’s the most frustrating and disappointed I’ve been for sure,” said Jansen. “I’m still trying to comprehend how we lost that game.

“Sam Ashton has picked the ball out of the net twice but he hasn’t had a save to make in the match.

“We peppered their goal but time after time they made saves or blocks or it was just wide.”

Jansen said his side were in control at half-time, and believes the disputed penalty call three minutes after the break was crucial.

“We felt in control at 1-0 up, we didn’t see anything troubling us,” he said. “The penalty was a bit of a blow. When they scored the second we threw everything at them but it wasn’t to be.

“Teaguey said he never touched the lad for the penalty, he’s bemused how they gave a penalty for that, but that was a big step in giving them a bit of an incentive.

“They had two chances and scored from them both, yes it’s disappointing but I’m scratching my head to fathom how we’ve come away without getting the result.”

Northwich are third in the Evo-Stik League First Division North table, with four games in hand on the teams above them, having won 11 of 12 games this season.

“Northwich Victoria have won every game bar one this season and haven’t conceded at home,” said Jansen.

“But we were far better than them, and sometimes the result doesn’t reflect the performance and it hasn’t on Tuesday.

“They were in the Conference four or five years ago and I’m sure they’ll be back there soon.”

The Magpies host Brackley Town in the National League North this weekend, and while Northwich will be in cup action on November 7, Chorley will travel to Stockport County in the league, and Jansen hopes their luck will turn soon.

“I keep saying that we’re so close, because I believe we have a great squad, they’re all together and they are all saying the same things, but little things are letting us down,” he said.

“One thing in football that’s massive is luck, they say it evens itself out over the season but I’m just waiting for a little bit and for the balls to drop for us and hit the back of the net for us.

“Once you get one or two wins winning becomes a habit, but it’s been a stuttering stop-start season, but hopefully we can start getting what we deserve from our play.”
