CHORLEY’S FA Trophy run came to a cruel end as they were beaten 6-5 on penalties by Conference Premier side Tamworth at Victory Park last night.

Jake Cottrell, who scored the Magpies first equaliser, missed the eighth home penalty allowing Jordan Keane to win it for the visitors.

Chorley had nearly been beaten in normal time but Andy Teague’s last minute equaliser meant there was an extra period after Nick Chadwick and Wayne Thomas had twice put Tamworth in front.

There were 16 penalties required in the shoot-out before Tamworth held their neve having converted three penalties to stay alive. Earlier, Chadwick, who scored the equaliser to force the replay, put Tamworth in front in the 10th minute.

After being picked out by Andy Haworth the former Everton and Plymouth striker moved along the edge of the box, from right to left, and his low shot bobbled underneath Sam Ashton.

Chorley regained their composure and grew in confidence and the Magpies were fully deserving of their equaliser when it came.

Josh Hine broke quickly down the right and fizzed a dangerous cross into the box, which Cottrell finished.

It lifted the Magpies and knocked the stuffing out of Tamworth. Chorley found another gear but couldn’t find the necessary finish. Kiel O’Brien’s header dropped just wide and Adam Roscoe was unlucky to clear the bar after Garry Flitcroft’s men kept Tamowrth on the back foot.

Chorley were somehow denied in a goalmouth scramble after Cameron Belford's punch failed to clear the box. Dean came closer still when he rattled the bar as the Lambs were relieved to hear the half-time whistle.

Yet momentum stayed with the Magpies after the re-start but they were made to pay for missed chances on the hour.

Ashton looked to have done enough with a superb double save to thwart Chadwick and Richard Peniket. But the ball spun out to former Burnley defender Thomas, who lifted it back over the keeper and under the bar.

It was a cruel blow for Chorley. But the Magpies refused to let their heads drop and went in search of another equaliser.

And it came in stoppage time from Teague. Belford blocked the ball on the line but the keeper couldn’t keep hold of it and Teague turned it in.

Dean and O’Brien had chances for Chorley who dominated the extra period but in the end it would be penalties that would decide the tie.

How the penalties unfolded (Chorley first): James Dean scored; Richard Barker scored; Darren Stephenson scored; Gavin Mahon scored; Dale Whitham missed; Justin Richards missed; Jamie Vermiglio missed; Andy Tamworth missed; Adam Roscoe scored; Wayne Tamworth scored; Andy Teague scored; Richard Peniket scored; Paul Jarvis scored; Tony Capaldi scored; Jake Cottrell missed; Jordan Keane scored - Tamworth win 6-5
