CHORLEY chairman Ken Wright has called on football fans from across the area to get down to Victory Park tonight and roar the Magpies on to one of the biggest wins in their history.

Garry Flitcroft’s giant-killers take on Tamworth in a mouth-watering FA Trophy third-round replay (7.45pm) after Saturday’s initial tie between the teams at the Lamb Ground ended 1-1.

And should Chorley send a Skrill Premier side crashing out for the second round running their reward will be a quarter-final trip to another team from the top flight of English non-league football.

At yesterday’s last-eight draw at Wembley – the iconic venue that will play host to the final – the Magpies were paired away to last season’s losing finalists Grimsby Town.

There is a quiet confidence in the Chorley camp ahead of tonight’s match that they can cause another shock – having got the better of big-spending Forest Green Rovers in the second round – to set up the clash with the Mariners.

But Wright believes his club will stand an even better chance if they attract a four-figure crowd for the third time this season.

He said: “It would be good if fans from Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End came out and gave us their support.

“If we could get more than a 1,000 people in there it could be worth a goal to us.

“We’ll take any help that we can get – but Tamworth certainly won’t be fancying it.”

The relegation-threatened Lambs needed a penalty from new signing – and former Everton striker – Nick Chadwick to ensure Chorley did not finish the job at the first time asking on Saturday.

“We were all very proud of the players but there was a feeling of disappointment after the match as they needed a soft penalty to get back into the game,” said Wright, who hailed the 500 Magpies supporters who travelled to Staffordshire as ‘unbelievable’.

“We had the better chances and hit the post so as I said there was a little disappointment that the lads didn’t get the win they deserved after playing so well and working their socks off.

“But it bodes well for the replay.”

Promotion-pushing Chorley play two rungs below Tamworth, Grimsby and Forest Green in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division.

And Wright added: “To get past these teams and get to the quarter-finals would be an unbelievable achievement.

“In many ways we are victims of our own success at the moment as we having to play so many games while trying to win our league as well.

“But the incentive for the players is massive.”

The Magpies have already made around £20,000 from their FA Trophy run.

They will receive a further £7,000 if they triumph tonight – and another £8,000 if they were to go and beat Grimsby in the quarter-finals.
