Room at the top for starring Chorley

A sixth straight win extended Chorley’s lead at the top of the Northern Premier League to 16 points on a day when closest challengers St Annes could only hang on for a draw against Netherfield.

Watched by a good-sized crowd at Windsor Park, Chorley comfortably accounted for Blackpool by 55 runs.

The foundation of Chorley’s total of 185 was a third-wicket stand of 101 between professional Chris Hartley (57) and Michael Critchley (50), a crucial partnership as the lower order were subsequently stifled by the spin of Blackpool pro Sajeewah Weerakoon, who took 4 for 51.

In a brisk opening reply, the visitors reached 25 without loss but once Jim Lee made the breakthrough only a splendid knock by opener John Mounsey, whose 70 included 14 fours, stood between Chorley and a 15-points victory.

Once Lee, who removed all the first five Blackpool batsmen, had accounted for Mounsey, Chorley readily wrapped up the proceedings with Blackpool all out for 130, Lee finishing with 6 for 42.

Bill Smith and Nigel Eastham shared the other four wickets.
