Jennings sick after getting elbowed out

HIT: Brook unloads on Jennings HIT: Brook unloads on Jennings

MICHAEL Jennings says promoter Frank Warren has offered him a rematch with Kell Brook after a cut consigned him to a fifth-round defeat on Saturday night – but it seems he may have to wait to face the Sheffield fighter.

Chorley’s Jennings could have been in line to challenge for the WBO world welterweight title with victory over Brook, but he slipped to only the third loss of his 39-fight career after referee Terry O’Connor called a halt.

The defeat came after 47 seconds of the fifth round.

Jennings indicated later that he expected to fight Brook again soon.

“Frank came to me afterwards and offered me a rematch,” he said. “I said I would have another fight.”

But Warren, who promotes both fighters, told the media that Brook will now fight for the world title in December and a rematch with Jennings is only a possibility further down the line.

Jennings required six stitches in his right eyelid and had no complaints about the fight being stopped.

“For the first two rounds I was useless, I wasn’t in it at all,” he said.

“In the next two rounds I started getting back into it, the fifth round as well.

“He threw an upper cut, I slipped that but his forearm caught me on the top of the eyelid.

“It is a pretty bad cut, it was bone on bone with it being his elbow. I wanted to carry on but they won’t let you.

"If it’s a bad cut, what can you do? “It’s unlucky and I’m gutted.

"I was just getting into it and I got caught by an elbow.

“It’s the worst feeling in the world.”
