THREE Holy Cross High School students are speeding to athletic success.

Year Seven pupils Zac Blackwell, Nial Maloney and Liam Blackwell are all in the top 10 in the North West in a range of events from 60m to javelin – and are gunning for future success.

Liam Blackwell, 12, got into running through his sister Bethany Blackwell and has been a member of Preston Harriers for four years.

He is ranked number one in the North West for 800m in his age group.

Zac Blackwell, no relation to Liam, competes for Horwich RMI and got into running through his mum Kim, who used to race the 400m.

Nial Maloney has his sights set on becoming a multi-eventer as he is ranked in the top 10 in the North West in three events.

He is sixth in the 100m with a time of 13.8 seconds and is 32nd in the UK; he is eighth in the North West at long jump with 4.16m and he is 10th in the North West at javelin with a throw of 20.40m.
