Young star Ben makes it to divisional finals

First published in Sport

A keen group of eight Chorley AC U11 athletes descended on Blackpool for a sports hall competition containing 11 different disciplines in which Ben Hughes starred and produced outstanding performances – coming fourth at three laps, third in both javelin and triple jump and 11th in the vertical jump and consequently has been selected for the divisional finals in Manchester. A very blustery day had Pennington Flash all whipped up like the froth at sea to greet the final SE Lancs.

X-C fixture of 2011/12 at Leigh Sports Village where Chorley AC's U11 athletes seemed to be the only ones turning up for business against some very strong Manchester outfits coming fourth with some very close positions and timings.

Ben Hughes and Scott Gouldthorpe were in a group of four who all crossed the line together with only marginal fractions of difference followed closely by Luke Hunter and Jack Hughes.

Emily Hunter equalled her brothers position of 16th in the girls race. Fergus Tallon, who has been majestic to date leading the U15s in first place overall, had an off-day coming in fifth, thus sadly dethroning himself.

The five seniors who toed the line made a fight of things with Paul Wareing leading with a good race in 47th with a large gap back to the supporting super vets of Barry Chester, Phil McCullagh, Tom Hilton and Mike Coppin.

The vets secured 13th V40 team, 8th V50 team and 3rd V60.
