Steve Waywell came close to securing a vital piece in his team-building jigsaw when he just missed out on the signature of an experienced midfield player at the weekend.
The Chorley manager said: “I had hoped to get him in time for the game against Rossendale United on Saturday, but we just couldn’t afford him at the moment.”
Waywell had discussions on Thursday with the midfielder he had targeted, a player with Football League experience. “He was just what we need and would have been a fantastic addition to the squad, a real coup,” he explained.
“I’m in the process of building a squad for next season that I intend to be strong enough for a real promotion push and I’m hopeful that the lad I went for last week will be with us before too long, because he is a leader with bags of experience and I’m sure he wants to come to Chorley.”
Speaking before the match at Wakefield last night (Tuesday), the Magpie boss said: “We still have 12 games to play this season and it’s important that we get as much as we can from every match.
“We have a tough one at Colwyn Bay on Saturday, but my lads are not afraid of anyone in the division. If we play well enough we can get something out of the game.
“The lads put on good displays against some strong, improving teams, including Woodley and Rossendale, both form teams who had taken points from higher-placed clubs in recent weeks.
“In another 0-0 draw on Saturday we were the only team who looked likely to win it. As well as five good chances we had 15 corners, while Rossendale had two.”
The Magpies will be back at Victory Park on Tuesday, against Mossley, who should have been here on New Year’s Day.
The sides drew 2-2 at Seel Park last August, Terry Fearns and Chris Amadi scoring.
Chorley lost 2-1 to Colwyn Bay in October, their goal coming from James Mullineux.
Before last night’s game, the Magpies had gone 215 minutes without a goal, since Alex Porter netted in the 55th minute against Leigh Genesis on February 27.
Terry Fearns is still the team’s leading scorer, with 14 of the team’s 53 league and cup goals, a statistic that underlines the team’s need for an out-and-out marksman if the club are to get back up the non-league ladder.
