THE big freeze has wrecked today’s non-league football programme - and clubs are also fearing their midweek matches could be in doubt.
All three UniBond League Division One North games featuring local sides were called off yesterday morning.
Chorley’s trans-Pennine trip to Wakefield never had a chance with the Yorkshiremen’s College Grove home under around 18 inches of snow, while Rossendale United’s game at Leigh Genesis was also an early casualty even though the pitch was not the main concern.
The undersoil heating had been switched on at the Leigh Sports Village – but conditions around the newly-built stadium were ruled unsafe.
Clitheroe were due to welcome Warrington Town to Shawbridge but that game was postponed at noon and the Blues also fear their Tuesday night match with Marine could also fall victim to the weather.
The entire Vodkat League programme was also wiped out and league secretary John Deal said: “We consulted with the Football Association and decided that the paramount issue was the safety of players, officials and spectators.
“In some cases people can’t get out of their houses so it would have been wrong to allow any games to go ahead.”
