Waywell targets more signings for Chorley

With three weeks to go before the start of pre-season training, Steve Waywell is busy recruiting for Chorley’s new season.

The new Magpies manager has been talking to a number of experienced players, and was meeting three prospective signings last night.

“These three have the sort of experience and ability that will help us build on last season’s mid-table finish,” said Waywell.

He has bought in Lee Merricks, a young but experienced coach, as assistant manager following Benny Phillips’ decision to stay in the Manchester area.

Lee, a former Blackpool and Bamber Bridge midfield man who took up coaching after injuries curtailed his playing career in his 20s, was Leigh Genesis manager late last season but is relishing the Chorley challenge, especially working with Waywell.

“I can’t wait to get started,” he said. “It will be valuable experience at Chorley in the management team with someone with Steve¹s background,” he said.

Defender Wayne Maden and midfielder Karl Brown have agreed to join the Magpies but Andy Heald decided on Leigh after apparently choosing Chorley.
