Stacey Kemp's Winter Olympic dream still alive

Chorley Citizen: Stacey Kemp and David King have lost their British Crown Stacey Kemp and David King have lost their British Crown

STACEY Kemp will be going to the Winter Olympics in Sochi even though her eight-year reign as national champion was brought to an abrupt end in Sheffield at the weekend.

The Chorley skater and partner David King we dethroned at the British Championships by rookie pair Amani Fancy and Christopher Boyadji who were making their senior debut.

But despite the defeat, the pair will be named in the GB team when National Ice Skating Association and British Olympic Association confirm the Olympic squad next week.

Fancy and Boyadji scored 141.28 points on their senior British pairs debut to better Kemp and King’s total of 132.07 – breaking a run of eight consecutive British titles.

Kemp was disappointed to lose her title but said it will not damage their Olympic hopes.

She said: “We had a few problems at Sheffield and did not have a good competition. This does not affect our Olympic selection as our international scores are over 20 points higher than any other British team.”

Kemp, who learnt to skate at Blackburn Arena, and King, who is from Cumbria, secured Great Britain a place in the pairs event for the Winter Olympics following a ‘make or break’ performance in Oberstdorf in October.

The pair, who had both been blighted by injury, skated a personal best score and finished in first place out of the 16 teams trying to qualify for the Winter Olympics.

“We finished in first place which was an incredible result for us after our unlucky season we had with injuries,” said Kemp after that victory. “We we ecstatic but also relieved that all our hard work and the determination we showed paid off.”

Kemp and King competed in the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2009 and finished in 16th place overall – now they are aiming for a top 10 finish in Sochi in February.
