Athletes race in cross-country championships
5:35pm Wednesday 23rd January 2013 in Sport
Five Chorley athletes chose to represent the club at the South-east Lancashire cross-country fixture at Leigh sports village.
The going was generally good underfoot as Friday's snow and ice had laced the quagmires to produce a mostly firm racing course, although the muddier sections through the woods did present some challenges. The closing stages of the last lap saw a tussle between the two leading Chorley athletes, as Paul Wareing (55th) just managed to hold off the challenge of Dave Kershaw (57th) who continued his superb run of form for the club. Jonathon Burgess (67th) wasn't too far behind setting a PB and taking more than three minutes off the time he clocked at September's Red Rose fixture at Leigh.
Further back, Michael Hendry (83th) had a good solid run and Barry Chester (115th) smashed under the 50-minute mark as the fifth placed V60 athlete home with another improved performance since September.
Unfortunately Chorley were one runner short of making a full senior men's team, however the veterans Paul, Dave and Barry chalked up a creditable 10th position among the vet teams.
