Calls for vehicles to stop speeding in village

County Councillor for Euxton, Buckshaw and Astley Aidy Riggott has been repeatedly raising concerns on behalf of residents over vehicles speeding in Astley Village with both Lancashire County Council and the local Policing Team.

Following fresh concerns last autumn, County Cllr Aidy Riggott again wrote to county hall chiefs who agreed to locate a SpID on Chancery Road between Wymundsley and Long Copse to see what traffic speeds are captured.

County Councillor Aidy Riggott said: “I called in to see some residents in Astley Village and afterwards stopped by to check that the SpID was set up and functioning properly and I was flabbergasted to see a car pass at a recorded speed of 41 mph.

“Over the next 20 minutes I saw another two cars pass at speeds in excess of 40 mph and up to 44 mph. I recorded some footage of these instances which I have made available to the police and LCC, who I immediately wrote to highlighting what I had seen and the need for urgent action.”

Lead Member for Highways at LCC County Cllr Andrew Snowden has responded to County Councillor Aidy Riggott confirming that he will ask LCC officers to prioritise assessing the data captured and impress on them the need to see what proposals can be brought forwarded from a highways view.

County Councillor Aidy Riggott also received a prompt response from Sergeant Moon of the Chorley Neighbourhood Policing Team who confirmed that the Police do have a location available to them at the junction of Wymundsley where they can carry out mobile enforcement and this site is down to receive monthly enforcement.

County Councillor Aidy Riggott thanked both LCC and the Police for their responses and added “The police have also added this to the agenda for their next Speed Management Meeting and have agreed to let me know the action points agreed to tackle this problem. Whilst the situation is still ongoing, can I urge all residents to take extra care through Astley Village and let me know.”
