FOOTBALL: BARRY Corr let his football do the talking by keeping Southend United in the FA Cup with a late equaliser at Macclesfield Town on Saturday.

The striker was not speaking to Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock after he opted to start with new loan signings Jack Midson and Antonio German in attack.

But Corr responded by coming off the bench to score a 76th minute leveller which secured a 2-2 draw for his side.

“I think the manager knew I was unhappy about not playing because he pulled me on it and I wouldn’t really speak to him,” said Corr, 25.

“I think he also knew I would try and impress if I got the chance to come on and thankfully I was able to score, so hopefully I can start our next game against Charlton tomorrow night now.

“I do think it’s good we have added competition for places up front though because it keeps everyone on their toes and should bring the best out of people too.”

Corr bagged Southend's second equaliser after German had earlier cancelled out Macclesfield’s opening goal from Colin Daniel.

That means the two teams will do battle again in a first round replay at Roots Hall a week tomorrow.

And Corr is confident of going through.

“I thought we were slightly the better side and we fancy our chances at home in the replay now,” said the Irishman.

“We want to stay in the cup for as long as we can as well because it’s a good way for the club to bring in some finances.”

Corr converted a fantastic left-wing cross from fellow substitute Ryan Hall for his sixth goal of the season and manager Sturrock felt Hall’s introduction made a massive difference to Southend United.

“He did what we expected of him and changed the game really,” said Sturrock. “His performances have been inconsistent even from half to half and he’s a young lad playing his first year in the professional ranks.

“But he did very well and helped us take control of the game.

“In the end I thought a draw was a fair result and we showed good character to come back twice and stay in the competition.”

The winners of next Tuesday’s replay will travel to either Cambridge United or Huddersfield Town in the second round.

They drew 0-0 at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday.
