Blackburn councillor: I sent controversial Israel email too

THE “OFFENSIVE” email at the centre of a Lancashire County Council racism probe was also sent by a leading Blackburn with Darwen councillor to 63 of his town hall colleagues, it has emerged.

Lancashire County Council has suspended 14 of its staff pending an investigation into the email, which compares the Israeli occupation of Gaza to Nazi Germany.

Salim Mulla, a community leader and Blackburn councillor, spoke out in support of the workers after they were suspended earlier this month.

Now he has admitted he sent the same email to all his fellow council members during the Israel Palestine conflict in January. And he said he did not think the content was offensive.

Coun Mulla, the senior vice chairman of Lancashire Council of Mosques, said: “I shared it with my colleagues. I send a lot of emails.

“A lot of people didn’t fully understand what was going on. I felt at the time, when the war was taking place, that it was important there were discussions within the council.

“It’s something I feel very strongly about and I wanted to share it with the elected members. I speak my mind - some people like it, some people do not.

“I have supported Holocaust Memorial Day every single year and I will continue to do that. But if there are other similar atrocities going on, not just in Gaza, I will say they are not acceptable.”

Coun Mulla’s email was passed to the Lancashire Telegraph by a member of the council who did not want to be named.

It is called “Holocaust Survivors and was sent to all Blackburn with Darwen councillors on the evening of January 19.

It contains pictures of 1930s and 1940s Germany and puts them next to modern-day images of the Gaza conflict.

The introduction to the email says: “The grandchildren of Holocaust survivors from World War II are doing to the Palestinians exactly what was done to them by Nazi Germany.”

As revealed by the Lancashire Telegraph earlier this month, the 14 county council staff, who came from different departments within County Hall, were suspended after sending or receiving the email.

Disciplinary hearings have yet to take place and unions are acting on behalf of some of the workers.

It is now understood bosses took action after a worker discovered the content on a colleague’s email account.

Blackburn with Darwen council leader Michael Lee said he could not remember whether he had received the email from Coun Mulla, but did not believe any action had been taken.

He added: “I have not seen it so I don’t want to comment.”

But one of the suspended workers, who did not want to be named, said: “If they have sent it round they should be in the same boat.

“It wasn’t meant to be offensive towards Jewish people, it was about the state of Israel. We know we shouldn’t have forwarded it on because it’s not related to work.”

Union bosses said the revelation weakened the case against the suspended staff.

Les Parker, who has been a Unite union rep at County Hall for 40 years, said: "People have been suspended for receiving this email.

"If you follow Lancashire County Council's principle, the whole of Blackburn with Darwen council should be suspended.

"Have you heard anything more ludicrous in your whole life?

"None of my members are involved - but I would be pointing out that a pillar of society had sent this email without any comeback whatsoever.

"If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for these guys. Or is it one rule for them up there and one rule for us down here?"

Mr Parker said he believed the email's content was "political", rather than of a racist nature.

He added: "I am quite adamant nobody should be suspended. They are using a sledgehammer to crack a nut."

County Council leader Hazel Harding said the latest revelation did not alter the county hall investigation.

She said: “We have standards that we expect for people at work in terms of their behaviour.

"That has nothing to do with what a member of the public may think is acceptable in their own time and is not influenced by anything externally.

"Our investigation is continuing.”

I've seen this e-mail.

It takes some famous images of German soldiers mistreating Jews during the Holocaust. It then puts images of soldiers of the Israeli Defence Force doing very similar things to Palestinians.

The message in the e-mail is clear. What the Israeli government is doing to the Palestinians is similar to what the Germans did to the Jews.

It is certainly hard-hitting and some people may find this offensive, but I can't see how it is racist. If it is, it is just as racist to the Germans as to the Israelis.

LCC , What are you frightened of ? Get on with sacking these racist bigot's & Mulla himdelf should resign.
Imagine if this was involving members of the BNP circulating the e-mail.
Or is it because this is down to a certain minority ?

Do you think our Council can get on with the work they are being paid to do? We have so many problems at the moment with companies making staff redundant or closing down altogether, financial worries etc. etc. etc. I wish they would spend more time worrying about what is on their doorstep and getting on with solutions. Any non work related e mails should not be distributed within the workplace. END OF STORY

If the Council saw fit to suspend employees from duty for sending this email, then it is surely discriminatory not to suspend a Councillor who has admitted to the same "offence". It would be completely indefensible not to suspend Clr Mulla.

Perhaps this man should be getting on with his council work here, instead of sending hate mail round?
Think himself luky he is not diveing in a bomb shelter in his own back yard and haveing his car pelted with stones everyday.
Perhaps he might be better going over there and doing something about it all.SOME HOPES EH???

What has Israel got to do with a Blackburn Counciller? Too many People on Blackburn Council are too concerned about other Countries affairs than Blackburn and the UK's affairs!

I too am tired of local politicians, of whatever political pursuasion, commenting on international affairs instead of concentrating on important local issues.
I refer od course to the Muslim councillors on Blackburn council who, to a man, offer vocal support to Muslims world wide where there is distress but offer no words or solutions to the multiplicity of problems we have with the delivery of local services.
The electorate however, keep electing them on the basis of their ethnicity and religion and not on the basis of there political allegience.

Everyone has a right to voice their opinion. So Coumcil workers have used work's email to express their opinions. It is hardly a crime. How many people use works email for subjects not related to work.I think you would find quite a lot and they don't all get suspended.
The council bosses have are not bothered about real issues facing residents hence this outpour.

how can salim mulla justify his actions by stating "A lot of people didn’t fully understand what was going on. I felt at the time, when the war was taking place, that it was important there were discussions within the council"!!! what has the war got to do with Darwen with blackburn council?
can't help but wonder that if the emails had been racist towards asian muslims then the employees (who sent & received it) would have sacked and riots would have taken place all over blackburn!!! salim mulla should resign

Dogsbolloxs says...

Councillor Mulla should resign immediately. As for the council staff, it is impossible to stop somebody from emailing you with this vile stuff, but anybody who sent the email on to other people should be sacked, as I am sure that this is against the councils email usage policy. Sack the senders, including this racist councillor.

I don't want to go along with some of the racist comments but Cllr Mulla is so patronising when he says " a lot of people don't know what's going on".
Does he think he is the only person following events in the Middle East.
Yes, Cllr Mulla, you should be given the equivalent of a P45 from the local authority. You don't deserve to be a councillor.

timeforcommonsense says...
5:11pm Mon 27 Apr 09

If the e-mail is as innocent as it is made out to be, why did councillor Mulla wait until now to admit he also sent the e-mail. There will be, as always, a double standard here. It is ridiculous that such material is only racist when sent by non-muslims. If the roles were reversed people would already have been sacked. It's time for equality to mean just that and for everyone to be treated alike. The indigenous population of this country are continually treated as second class citizens.

easymonies says...
5:46pm Mon 27 Apr 09

We know Councilor Mulla keep keep his job. They wont sack him because LCC know it will be classed as racist if they do sack him. However, he is admitting that he has contravened the IT policy of LCC. The outcome should be interesting. The problem is he isn't sacked then he will think he is untouchable and this will cause further problems when he pushes the rules the next time. Anfd there will be a next time. The other people who were suspended for sending these e-mails should also be re-instated instantly and let them get on with their work. At least then we will not be paying them whilst they are sat at home. It would be interesting to know what nationalities these 14 are also to see if all are being treated equally.

10:11pm Mon 27 Apr 09

Cohesion will never work. How do we know what Councillor Mulla is telling his constituents? He should be removed from the council immediately. If it was the other way around there would have been marches and riots before now.
Racism is one-sided in this country.
As for Michael Lee not being able to remember, how convenient. Anyone would be able to remember a subject like this. He should be making sure that employees are doing their jobs properly instead of wasting time and our Council Tax money.

I have read this email and it isn't racist!
As others have said it may be political.
The policy for sending emails is for "business use only",the people that have recieved the email but not forwarded shouldn't have been suspended.
The rest of the staff should be given a warning but is suspending them the best way?

Faithless you make me laugh.
You are generalising all muslims.
"muslims make me feel inferior" Why is that?Is it because some muslims have better jobs or drive a better car than you.
Come on tell us why instead of generalising.
"since your girlfriend ran off with one"
hhmmm have you not asked yourself why she ran off with someone else, could be your a minger or she had enough off you LMAO!!!

I agree with Amir. Why should anyone be suspended for forwarding this email? Would they also have been suspended for forwarding any other non-work-related email?

It's freedom of spech. They should be allowed to send what they want to each other.

The only thing I would say is that in future it might be the best idea to send this kind of thing over private email addresses instead of work ones...

These people need to be treated like anyone else regardless of creed ,colour or religion.

As for counsellor Mulla, this is just the latest of a long line of gaffes and inapropriate comments that he gets away with.

I certainly wouldn't want him representing my ward. He's a total liability.

I have been looking at most of the messages and I find that its been like a political contest & abuse rather than a comment on the main man, Councillor Mulla, can every one calm down & concentrate on the report.

Owain was quite right, one needs to settle down, both ganga man, Lynford and Akon are trying to accumalate political points, wait for the ballot box and then make your points of view.
I must say that ganga man is in some way politialy right and I must say that Lynford is somewhat right in what they are trying to put accross, not everyone will agree with them.
On the BNP, they are a legal Political Party, one must remember! it doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with the BNP or any other party's political policy's. Just ask yourselves, which way you will go, right left or centre, I know which way I will be going.
Just think what this story is about, its not about you me or any other person other than what this story tell us, and that is about Councillor Mulla.

easymonies says...
3:11pm Tue 28 Apr 09

This story is not just about Coun. Mulla. It is also about the 14 people who were suspended for sending/receiving the same e-mail the Coun. Mulla sent utilising government property. Basically, Coun. Mulla should also be suspended or the 14 re-instated. Currently because there is a lack of action on either solution it is being turned into a racist agenda because of double standards. Or in other words discrimination.

Faithless says...
5:03pm Tue 28 Apr 09

Why is everyone resorting to personal attacks instead of discussing with the issue? How old are you guys? 10? 12?

Or maybe all this aggressiveness between Akon and ganjaman is a build up of sexual frustration? Do you two wanna get a room together? We all know about the sexual orientations of most BNP members!

I saw the email today that was allegedly sent by Councillor Mulla and there is no racist content in it. It has pictures showing what happened during world war 2 and what is happening in the modern day and comparing the two. There is nothing defamatory in the email and the person receiving it is left to make up their own mind.

The email was sent by Mulla on the evening of January 29th. This was a time when he was not doing work for the council but in his personal time. It would be unfair to have a go at him for something he does privately no matter how much I want to have a go.

Yes, Mulla is a liability. He has also done more singlehandedly for his own ward then any BNP member has done for his/her own ward in the history of the BNP.

This is why Muslims make me feel inferior. Why can't the BNP be more like them?

my major point of concern is this:

picture an of a muslim woman being stoned to death for an unproven crime of adultery. over ride it with a comment exclaiming abhorence against a people/religion that condones this and imagine it was sent by a white man to his colleagues.

we all have opinions. i work for the nhs and have some. i know police officers who have them. and doctors and teachers, but we cant voice them or we will be sacked.

im not a racist. i abhor the BNP and their fascist views. I also abhor bigotted and prejudicial religions.

and i utterly abhor the fact that in the United Kingdom we clearly have one rule for the indegenous and another for the immigrant population.

any white man would be sacked for this act and he well knows it. The very fact that this councillor can openly show ignorance to this fact and expect nothing to happen because he sent it too is a sad sad indictment of our country today.
