A bungling agency nurse who failed to call an ambulance for a dying man while under investigation for a previous blunder has been struck off.

The elderly man, referred to as patient B, was found ‘chesty and clammy’ with his lips ‘going blue’ by healthcare assistants at Euxton Park Care Home.

Kim McConaghy was advised by colleagues to call an ambulance for patient B three times before she finally took action, the Nursing and Midwifery Council heard.

McConaghy, who was employed by the 24 Hour Recruitment HKS Group nursing agency, also failed to carry out CPR on the patient, who died on May 9, 2011.

Just months earlier she had failed to call an out of hours doctor for a diabetic woman suffering from breathlessness at Thelwall Grange Nursing Home in Warrington.

McConaghy failed to tell the nursing agency she was under investigation for that matter, working three shifts unsupervised while subject to a conditions of practice order.

The NMC panel found McConaghy guilty of a string of allegations in her absence and banned her from nursing.

Panel chairman Colin Youngson said: “The panel found that Ms McConaghy has not demonstrated any insight into her actions or shown any real remorse.

“Overall, the panel is not persuaded Ms McConaghy’s dishonesty and clinical negligence would not be repeated.

“There remains a real and significant risk, if Ms McConaghy were allowed to remain on the register, of a repetition of her dishonesty and misconduct.

“The only appropriate and proportionate sanction is a striking-off order.”

McConaghy, who did not attend the central London hearing, has 28 days to appeal her permanent ban from the profession.

A spokesman for Euxton Park Care Home, said: “We were let down by a qualified agency nurse who not only should have known to call an ambulance immediately but at first ignored the urgings of junior colleagues to do so.

“Following the incident the home manager at the time notified the safeguarding team.

“The company also informed the Nursing and Midwifery Council which led to the NMC disciplinary hearing.

“The wellbeing of the people in our care is our first priority and we have an active whistle-blowing policy that encourages staff to report any concerns and we always work with the relevant authorities to ensure they are rigorously investigated.”
