A MAN punched his estranged partner twice as he was holding their two-year-old child in his arms.

Blackburn magistrates heard Connor Barnes became abusive when his ex went to drop off the child for an access visit.

The court was told he was 'extremely ashamed' of his behaviour.

Barnes, 23, of Moorgate Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting Leanne Wills.

He was fined £350 with £100 compensation, £85 costs and £35 victim surcharge.

He was also made subject to a restraining order for 12 months which prohibits him from having any contact with Miss Wills.

Eddie Harrison, prosecuting, said Miss Wills had gone to the defendant's home to drop their son off but he was waiting outside and immediately became aggressive.

"While he was holding their child he punched her twice on the jaw," said Mr Harrison.

He said a woman who was passing intervened verbally and while Barnes was shouting at her Miss Wills was able to get back in her taxi and leave the scene.

Imran Hussain, defending, said his client was a man of previous good character.

"He doesn't dispute the facts and he is extremely ashamed of his behaviour which was totally out of character," said Mr Hussain.

"He momentarily lost his self control and he is deeply remorseful."
