ROAD safety schemes at either end of East Lancashire are set to go ahead after county council engineers updated their highways programme.

Plans had been made to introduce a 20mph speed limit along Knowsley Road in Wilpshire, at a cost of £18,000.

But after a further assessment of the route, it was found another £14,206 was required to meet construction and traffic management costs.

County Cllr John Fillis, highways cabinet member, has approved the additional cash requirement from unallocated budgets for accident-reduction works.

Elsewhere £59,740 had been set aside to provide a pedestrian crossing and tactile paving in the Skipton Road area of Colne.

An extra £12,620 was required, on review, to include extra high-friction road surfacing materials, on areas approaching the crossing.

Cllr Fillis, as part of transport capital programme changes, has transferred unspent road safety funds for the purpose.

An extra £5,681 has also been found to purchase land around Nelson Interchange.
