After finding the car abandoned near Briercliffe Road, both men were spotted walking nearby, the prosecution said.

Burnley Crown Court heard officers found quantities of cannabis on Hussain when he was searched which led to officers raiding his home.

The prosecution said both men were also found with mobile phones containing messages ‘alluding’ to drug dealing.

Sentencing Hussain, of Birkbeck Way, Burnley, to eight months in prison for possession with intent to supply, Judge Jonathon Gibson, said: “I gave Mr Baig a suspended sentence because he seemed the less culpable of the two of you.

“You were found with a small amount of cannabis in your pocket and when you were arrested a bag was found nearby with 17 small bags in it.

“In your house 22 bags were found and just over £400 in cash.

“Your sentence would have been 12 months at young offenders but I will shorten this to eight months on account of your guilty plea.”

Hussain received a consecutive sentence of 14 days for not turning up to court and will have 12 months of supervision upon release.

There were no drugs found at Mr Baig’s home in Grey Street and he received a sentence of seven months, suspended for 18 months.

Prosecuting, Cecilia Pritchard, said: “Officers noticed a car driving at excessive speed in Briercliffe Road and Mr Hussain was found with two snap bags of cannabis on him.

“Both defendants had phones with messages on that alluded to drug dealing.

“There was another plastic bag found near them with about £170 worth of cannabis inside.

“There was nothing found at Mr Baig’s home but Mr Hussain had £220 worth of cannabis at his house and £479 in cash stashed.

“Mr Hussain claimed that the drugs were for his own personal use.”

Defending, Zahra Baqri, said: “Mr Hussain has said his addiction to cannabis is out of control. He has accepted that his behaviour needs to be addressed and he will welcome any assistance with this.”
