THOUSANDS of people with be out and about across East Lancashire this weekend at events varying from armed forces tributes to vibrant floral displays.

Celebrations will mark Armed Forces Day today, while other highlights include the continuation of Blackburn Cathedral Flower Festival and the Countryside Comes to Town event in the town.

Padiham on Parade will be taking place today and tomorrow, as veterans from Burnley Armed Forces Covenant and others come together to organise one of the area’s biggest events of the year.

Cllr Bea Foster, Burnley Council’s executive member for leisure and culture said: “This weekend is set to provide great days out for all the family.

“A fantastic line-up with plenty of activities on both days is going on to keep everyone entertained.”

Entertainment will be provided in the form of exhibitions, vintage vehicles, and music at the free 1940s themed armed forces event, with more details available on their Facebook page.

The weekend will also see the continuation of Blackburn Cathedral Flower Festival, headlined by an appearance from Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain today at 12.30pm.

Acting Dean of Blackburn Cathedral Philip North believes the festival marks a tremendous coup for the area.

Bishop Philip North said: “There’s been a lot of changes and regeneration in the area recently, so for this to happen at this time and looking so beautiful is a real pleasure.”

Blackburn will also welcome Countryside Comes to Town today in the Cathedral Quarter, where the festival main stage and big screen will host international artists and well-known personalities between 10am and 6pm.

Blackburn’s Business Improvement District, who organised the nature themed event, believes the day will be a great success featuring theatre, music and live animals.

Manager of the Blackburn BID, Harriet Roberts, said: “Countryside Comes to Town is one of our biggest events and promises to be packed with fun, food and fabulous entertainment.”

Sunday will see a classic car show at Towneley Park in Burnley from noon, while at the same time in Towneley Hall a variety of craft stalls featuring photography, art and furniture will be on offer.

People will have to be wary of the weather this weekend however as conditions are set to be unpredictable.

A Met Office spokeswoman said: “Saturday will be a day of sunshine and shower, a real mixed bag. Some areas will also see tremors of thunder and heavy rain.

“Sunday will see a bright start but again will likely see showers as we progress into the afternoon.”
