HUNDREDS of excited families gathered in Ribchester to see the village’s 56th annual Field Day event turn out to be a huge success.

Villagers were out in force with a colourful parade, accompanied by several bands, which wound its way round the streets.

The event was organised by the Field Day Committee. Ribchester Amateur Theatrical Society kicked-off the fun with a production on Friday evening.

The end of the parade was followed by the crowning of the Field Day queen, Rebecca Holgate, by retiring Field Day queen Danielle Jackson. Rebecca’s attendants were her sister Sophie Holgate, Thea Barrett, Francesca Parkinson and Megan Greaves. Page boy was Charlie Riding.

There was also a display of acrobatics and competition classes including homemade drizzle cake and handmade musical instruments, which were judged by Glynn and Gill Anderton, Deb Groves and Ian Phillips.

On Sunday, residents took part in the village tea party and were entertained by jazz group Quay Change.

Hearts were in mouths when tightrope artist Bernie Bennett and the Circus Whiz put on a dazzling acrobatic display.

Dozens of Ribchester businesses set up marquees for attendees to visit.

The main marquee saw dozens of entries in a variety of classes from homemade drizzle cake to hand-made musical instruments, which were judged by Glynn and Gill Anderton, Deb Groves and Ian Phillips.

Fiona Finch, a Field Day Committee publicity officer said this year’s event was ‘incredible’.

She said: “We had fantastic weather for this year’s festival which was absolutely fantastic.

“There were hundreds of people lined up to watch the parade which was very topical with a Mohammed Ali feature.

“The weekend is one of the biggest in the villages calendar and we want to make sure we do the best we can to make it memorable.

“It’s a chance for the community to come together and take part in lots of nice activities.

“We are extremely grateful for all the wonderful donations we receive year upon year which allows us to keep the event going.”
