A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD boy with the self-styled nickname ‘Steven Grylls’ is to tackle the National Three Peaks Challenge with his mum for charity.

Little adventurer Steven Brown, who gave himself the nickname after likening himself to famous adventurer Bear Grylls, aims to tackle the UK’s three highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland in 24 hours.

Joining the young explorer will be his mum Caroline Brown, who owns West End Fish and Chips, in Blackburn Road, Oswaldtwistle.

They have raised £2,000 so far for Steven’s chosen charity, Chorley-based Derian House, which cares for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.

Caroline, 30, said: “I love having hours out walking when it is just me and Steven.

“He decided he wanted to do it for a charity so I asked which and he said for children who need help.

“He wanted to raise money so that children in need could have fun and he goes around telling everyone about Derian House.

“Not only am I doing something I enjoy with my amazing little man but we are raising money for a worthwhile cause.”

The duo have been practising climbing the three peaks in training ahead of the challenge on Saturday, May 28.

Steven, who is in Year 3 at Oswaldtwistle Moor End Community Primary School, climbed Ben Nevis in five hours and 20 minutes last weekend.

Nicholas Brown, Steven’s dad, will drive the pair between each of the destinations, allowing Steven to sleep between climbs.

Mrs Brown said: “He wants to be there and he might attempt one of the climbs with us but my little girl doesn’t have the love of walking.”

Jessica, four, who attends Early Start Nursery, took on Snowdon when she was three years old.

Mrs Brown said: “It is amazing to see them reach the top.

“All the walkers say how well they are doing.”

Steven, who is one of the youngest children to complete the National Three Peaks, will wear his “national three peaks training” t-shirt and “Bear Grylls trousers” for the climb.

Sandra Robinson, spokesman for Derian House, said: “I think that what they are doing is just amazing."

“I think this family are an inspiration and it means so much that this little boy chose at such a young age to help other people in this way.

“I’m so proud of both of them and we are so grateful.”
