PATRIOTIC Lancastrians were out in force to celebrate St George’s Day this weekend.

Events and marches, including a medieval day, were staged across the area to mark the event which fell on Thursday, April 23.

Hundreds of Scouts were in Clitheroe yesterday to take part in the annual St George’s Day parade.

The march, which was cancelled last year was held for the 100th time and saw youngsters walk from the gates of the castle to St Mary’s Church.

Visitors to Darwen’s Market Square were taken back to the days of jousting and jesters on Saturday for Darwen Town Council’s annual celebrations.

The entertainment started with the opening ceremony and a presentation by the mayor, and was closed with a singalong with Daisy-Belle Dumsday.

Other highlights included a Punch and Judy show and travelling minstrels while once again the town received a visit from St George and the Dragon.

Also on Saturday the Royal Society of St George Blackburn and East Lancs branch handed out red roses to ladies in Blackburn.

The group gave out the silk roses for free to raise awareness of the day.

Clitheroe Castle also staged themed activities during the weekend including a dragon hunt, fancy dress and the chance to watch combat displays and handle weapons.

More than 200 Scouts took part in a parade from St Paul’s church in Accrington yesterday and parades also went from St Mary’s church in Yorkshire Street, Burnley, and from Whitaker Park in Rawtenstall.
