A WOMAN who took a barbering course as she did not want to make a mess of cutting her husband’s hair has opened her own salon.

Katy Beazley, 45, has recently opened Groom Barbers in High Street, Chorley, and plans to take on additional member of staff in April.

It was not a trade she had previously considered but found a hidden passion for barbering.

She said: “My husband used to play rugby on a Saturday and found it hard to make time to have his hair cut so asked me to do it for him.

“I was worried I wouldn’t do a very good job so enrolled on an entry level barbering course to learn the basics.

“I discovered I really enjoyed it and achieved a pass with distinction.

“I felt the next level of the course didn’t offer enough practical experience and so I applied to the Joseph Lanzante Training Academy to complete my training.”

Katy, who lives in Euxton and has two children, enrolled on the course in 2013 and attributes the personalised learning experience to her success today.

Prior to her career as a barber, Katy worked as an administrator for Lancashire County Council.

She hopes to develop further by opening more salons in the future but for now she is enjoying her new career. She said: “I loved it. It was a small class so we were all in it together and all supported one another. It was a real personalised learning experience.”

“It really identifies your strengths and weaknesses and allows you to develop at your own pace, offering praise and encouragement along the way.”

Joseph Lanzante, who trained Katy was full of praise for his former student.

He said: “Katy was a great student and it is fantastic to see her doing so well.

“She was a pleasure to train and thrived on the course. It was clear from the beginning she was a natural barber and I wish her all the best in the future.”
