But he attacked her when they met for the first time in 18 months, Blackburn Magistrates’ Court heard.

She was taken to hospital for a brain scan on a large egg-shaped lump on her head following the incident, and was not left alone for 48 hours.

Duckworth, 36, of Blackburn Road, Great Harwood, was remanded on bail until February 12 for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

District Judge Richard Manning said Duckworth had been “grossly undercharged”.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said Miss Shaw, who was out drinking with friends, was standing in the vestibule of a pub looking in her bag. Miss Shaw looked up to see her brother.

Miss Allan said: “She said it was a bit awkward but she tried to make some conversation with him. He had an angry look on his face and when she said their mother had been thinking of him on Christmas Day he pushed her hard on the chest. She fell to the floor, banging her head on the floor, and lost conciousness.”
