A BID to install roller shutters on a shop in Manchester Road, Nelson looks doomed to fail.

Mr H Yousaf wants to fit a new front to his hairdressers’ premises including the security device.

It is part of a pre-1850’s terrace in the Whitefield Conservation Area.

Since 2003 it has had a traditional timber shop front, panelled door and sash windows.

Now the Nelson Committee of Pendle Borough Council has been asked to consider the application to modernise the frontage at 97 Manchester Road with an illuminated sign.

A report from planning officers to the meeting at Nelson Town Hall on Monday will recommend refusal of the application.

The report says: “Proposals would not preserve the character and appearance of the conservation area, or the property itself.

“Taking in to account the prominence of the site within the conservation area, the changes proposed raise significant design concerns.

“The proposed shop front and external roller shutter would constitute an inappropriate form of development.

“The proposal would not enhance or preserve the Conservation Area, having a detrimental impact on the character and appearance of the heritage asset.”
