A pool filled with 1,500 litres of warm gravy hosted 20 grapplers – six women and 14 men – as David O’Connor and Megan Hayhurst were crowned this year’s champions.

The event, now in its sixth year, is labelled ‘the craziest culinary competition in the world’.

Carol Lowe, manager of the Newchurch Road pub, said: “The atmosphere has been amazing and we’ve been packed out all day.”

The tournament raises around £3,000 for the hospice each year, although yesterday’s total is still to be counted.

Fundraiser Denise Gee said: “The competitors are such good sports and help us raise an incredible amount each year, which helps us care for our patients and their families.”
