Edna Peat, senior carer, said: “We will never forget him. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and was always really polite right up until the end.

“He was a real gentleman and we will all miss him.”

The lifelong Claret was able to celebrate his last birthday, in March, with a win over fierce rivals Blackburn Rovers. He also enjoyed a trip to Turf Moor when he turned 103.

Hartley still listened to Burnley FC games on the radio, after being taken to his first game in 1919. He was born in North Street and fended for himself until 2008, when he moved to Dove Court’s Nightingale House.

His wife Muriel died in 1996 and he also outlived his brother, Harry, and sister Agnes.

In his younger days he worked at John’s Gray weaving mill in Elm Street before transferring to work at various Nelson mills. Until the age of 92 he remained a keen crown green bowler.

Hartley’s funeral, which his great niece Christine Marsden and great nephew John Edge will attend, is scheduled for next Tuesday at Burnley Crematorium.
