RESIDENTS are calling for road safety measures to be put in place following a three-car smash.

A driver had to be pulled out of his 4x4 in Blackburn Road, Great Harwood, after his stationary vehicle was hit.

Those living in the area said it was the third crash they had seen in recent months and called on councillors to bring in traffic calming measures.

Adam Earnshaw, who lives in Hope Street, said: “I live about ten metres away from where it happened. I heard a screeching and a big bang.

“We need something done on that stretch because sooner or later somebody is going to die.”

In January last year, a van ploughed into the wall at Little Brook Children’s Nursery resulting in a three-year-old suffering minor cuts.

The latest collision involved a blue Vauxhall Astra just after 6pm on Monday.

The vehicle collided with the 4x4 and a Renault Kangoo as well as the wall at Great Harwood Cemetery.

Nobody was injured but a man was arrested.

Father-of-one Marc Arthur, 31, of Windsor Road, said he would like to see measures such as a speed camera, road bumps or a pelican crossing.

The support worker said: “I am sure that if anyone was stood on the corner where this crash happened, they would have died.

“Something needs to be done there. It was one of the worst crashes I have seen.”

Overton ward councillor Gareth Molineux said he supported the residents and added he would speak to Hyndburn MP Graham Jones about what could be done.

He said: “The issue of this road and this particular area of the road is not new.

“For the last couple of years, residents have been asking for calming measures and I’ve spoken to Lancashire County Council.”

Coun Molineux said it was a difficult situation as legislation meant a single form of traffic calming was not possible on an A road. Oliver Starkey, county council highways manager for Hyndburn, said: “We're aware of this incident and will discuss the circumstances at the next of our regular meetings with the police to evaluate whether there's any action we could reasonably take to prevent similar incidents in future."
