An alleged rape victim of former Commons deputy speaker Nigel Evans has told a jury he made "a bad decision" to get into bed with him.

The man, aged in his early 20s, claims he woke up to find the 56-year-old MP on top of him, and he was then raped as he laid "in shock".

The incident is said to have taken place after the complainant attended a dinner party last year at Evans's home in his Ribble Valley constituency in Lancashire.

Preston Crown Court heard the man say he had not invited or wanted any sexual contact but he said he got under the covers with Evans after he was "escorted" to his bedroom.

He was asked by prosecutor Mark Heywood QC why he had followed the MP into his bed when his intention had been to sleep alone in an attic at the address in the village of Pendleton.

The witness replied: "I don't know. Now in hindsight, it was stupid but at the time I did not see that it would necessarily lead to something more.

"It was a bad decision but I didn't rationalise it at the time."

Mr Heywood asked: "Did you intend that sexual activity would take place?"

"No," he replied.

The prosecutor said: "With Mr Evans?"

"No," he repeated.

The complainant went on to describe numerous attempts by the MP to engage in sexual activity while they were in bed together during the night which he brushed away.

Giving evidence in court from behind a screen, the complainant said that at one point he ejaculated after Evans had taken hold of his penis against his will.

Several hours later he awoke to find Evans astride his back, he said.

He said: "I didn't move at all. I couldn't move...in shock.

"Even though what had been going on back and forth, I felt (it was) a rapid escalation and I was not prepared for it."

When arrested last May on suspicion of rape, the MP told detectives that sexual contact between the pair had been consensual.

The complainant is one of seven young men that Evans is alleged to have sexually assaulted on various dates between 2002 and last year.

Evans denies one rape, two indecent assaults and six sexual assaults.

The complainant, who is gay, said he had spent time working in Westminster and had previous physical contact with Evans during an office Christmas party.

He recalled that Evans came over to sit next to him and "scruffed my hair and then kissed my cheek".

"I think he had his hand up the back of my jacket," the complainant added.

He said he thought Evans was drunk and that he had not invited any physical contact.

The jury heard that the complainant had previously stayed overnight at the defendant's home in the attic room prior to the Christmas party.

He returned to Evans's address for the dinner party last Easter and was among four guests.

The group moved on to local pub The Swan With Two Necks after dinner before returning to Evans's home.

The complainant said he was "between tipsy and drunk" and he thought the MP was in a similar state.

As soon as they were alone in his house the MP sat next to him and put his arm around him, he told the jury.

The complainant continued: "Then he put his right arm on my right leg. Then he put his fingers on the top of my shirt, they just hovered there."

He said he felt "uncomfortable" before they went upstairs to bed.

He said: "He was stood at the bottom of the stairs. He let me go in front and Nigel was right behind me.

"As I got to the top he sort of escorted me into his bedroom.

"He didn't switch the light on. We walked in. I don't think much was said.

"Then he just got under the covers on his side and I just got into bed as well."

He said he took off his shirt and jeans and was lying under the covers in his boxer shorts, facing away from Evans.

The complainant told the jury he had shared a bed before in his student days and did not think it meant anything.

After a few minutes in bed he said Evans said to him: "Shall we cuddle?"

He said he replied: "I am tired."

The complainant continued: "He put his arms around me. He tried to spoon me as it were and a couple of seconds later he was running his hands towards my groin area. They ended on my groin over my shorts, on my penis. Maybe sort of stroking it.

"I sort of rolled slightly away and reiterated I was tired."

But he said Evans persisted and he reminded him that Evans was planning to go to church later that morning.

He then described the MP's attempts to kiss him.

"He tried to kiss me," he said. "I scrunched my face. I felt a bit embarrassed because my face was heavily scrunched up."

He said Evans then tried to pull his boxer shorts down.

The complainant repeated that he was tired and then got up to go the bathroom.
