A MEMORIAL to one of East Lancashire’s most famous seafarers is set to be given a better berth in the middle of Clitheroe.
Civic campaigners are concerned that the blue plaque to Capt James King, who sailed with Capt James Cook on his final round-the-world voyage, is too obscure.
Clitheroe Civic Society chairman Pauline Wood has told council planners that her organisation had been asked by English Heritage to take care of the town’s blue plaques.
Capt King’s plaque is attached to the Yorkshire Bank in Market Place - which stands on the site of the vicarage where the sailor’s father lived when he was born in July 1750.
She added: “The plaque on the King Lane side of the bank, is written in small letters and is difficult to read. Also being so high up, it is just not noticed, which is a great pity.”
Capt King died from tuberculosis in October 1784.
