East Lancashire on flood alert
FLOOD alerts have been issued across East Lancashire - just 48 hours after snow wreaked havoc across the area.
Heavy flurries caused problems in several locations, with 20 to 30 cars abandoned in and around the A56 between Rising Bridge and Haslingden.
Lancashire Police was forced to issue an urgent appeal to drivers to retrieve their cars so all routes could fully reopen safely.
Vehicles were also left near the roundabouts near Sykeside and Grane Road as the sheer force of the snow shower left driving near-impossible.
Bus services were diverted or cancelled across East Lancs and the M6 near Leyland was also brought to a standstill when a sudden burst of more than a foot of snow at around 8.30pm on Friday, the Highways Agency said.
A number of accidents including jack-knifed lorries blocked lanes and mountain rescue workers were drafted in to help and check on the condition of drivers stranded by the snow.
A diabetic man was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital after falling ill, while an ambulance taking a female patient to Royal Preston Hospital had to be dug out of the snow by Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue team.
Phil O'Brien, team leader of Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue, said: "It was potentially a very serious situation. The Highways Agency managed to get people moving at about 4.30 to 5am on Saturday.
"There were hundreds of cars stuck but most people seemed in good spirits."
Snowfall caused the roof of one former Rossendale pub roof to collapse in the early hours of Saturday. The Buck Inn at Cowpe is being converted into two private homes.
Neighbour Barry Stewart said: “It was around 2am when my wife and I heard a loud bang. At first we just thought something had fallen over but one of my neighbours came round and said I should have a look.”
Falling masonry from the building also smashed onto the roof of a red van parked outside.
Property owner Nigel Adamthwaite is believed to be away.
Rising temperatures and rain on Saturday night and yesterday then prompted a rapid thaw, leading to flood warnings being issued for at least six main waterways locally.
Environment Agency officials said the River Ribble at Samlesbury, and the River Darwen, including Pleasington and Blackburn, was at risk of flooding.
And the Rivers Calder, Brun, Don and Pendle Water, from Laneshawbridge to the River Ribble including Trawden, Burnley, Nelson, Colne, Accrington and Whalley, will be similarly affected.
9:34am
SUNDAY
The thaw continues in East Lancashire, with temperatures at around six centigrade in East Lancashire today and rain washing away much of the snow that fell on Friday night.
There are currently 31 flood alerts for the north west, with melting snow causing potential problems around the area.
Here's a link to the Envrinment Agency's live flood warning map.
Although major routes are clear of snow, there may still be dangerous driving conditions here and there caused by icy patches or areas of meltwater.
Here's the weather forecast for today:
9:34pm
FLOOD WARNINGS
The Environment Agency has issued a number of flood warnings for the north west, including many parts of East Lancashire, as last night's snow melts.
5:52pm
There's still a fair amount of snow lying around in East Lancashire tonight, so take care on the roads this evening.
Most major routes are passable without difficulty, but a large amount of snow is piled at the roadsides and icy areas remain.
Watch out for areas of localised flooding where the ice is melting.
Here's the latest weather forecast:
5:49pm
As snow thaws and rain arrives, Met Office warn of risk of flooding. There is likely to be surface water on the motorways, take care.

An urgent appeal has been issued by Lancashire Police for motorists who abandoned their vehicles overnight in the Rising Bridge and Edenfield areas.
The police message reads:
'This is an urgent message for people in the Edenfield area:
'There are around 20/30 abandoned vehicles on the A56 between Rising Bridge and Edenfield.
'The snow is now starting to melt and the road will be fully up and running soon so we need you to move your vehicles as soon as you can.'
11:28am
And a broadly similar story for buses across Blackburn, Hyndburn, Burnley, Pendle and the Ribble Valley, as Transdev Lancashire, our other major bus operator, explains:
'Due to the weather conditions, some routes remain altered today.
Blackburn:
124 to Chorley will not serve Wheelton, Brinscall or Betts Lane
Spot On 2 will not run to Chapels or Fishmoor Road
Spot On 4 will not run to Feniscowles or Livesey Branch Road
Spot On 6/7 Hyndburn Circulars will not run to Park Road, Wordsworth Drive or Rothesay Road
Burnley:
Mainline services are unable to reach Sabden, Trawden, or the Northolme Estate
Starship services are unable to reach Dalton Street (Stoops Estate), Pike Hill, Worsthorne, Cambridge Drive or Waidshouse Road. Services down Rossendale Road have been diverted via Liverpool Road. Services to Harle Syke are turning at Lane Head.
Service 8 cannot reach Bacup.
All services are also likely to be running behind schedule, as road conditions are difficult. Our priority is passenger safety, so our drivers will be with you as soon as they can.'
The message is clear - check before you travel.
11:25am
Buses are beginning to move in Rossendale - all services were off first thing but the situation seems to be improving.
The Rossendale Bus website said this at 10.40am:
'A snow plough has now been and cleared the roads surrounding our Haslingden depot and so we are now beginning to operate services 464, 482, 483 & 484.
'It will take some time together all buses in place and so the timetable for these roads will be very ad-hoc for the time-being. Road speeds are slower than normal at the moment as all road users take care on the slippery surfaces.
'We aim to have buses on services 244 and 273 very soon. All other services are still not operational.'

Don't forget animals in cold weather
A CHARITY is urging pet owners to pay extra attention to their animals in the cold weather.
The RSPCA is urging people to provide respite from the severe weather for all types of pets ranging in size from horses to rabbits.
As well as domestic animals, the charity is asking people to spare a thought for wildlife such a birds.
Sophie Hacking, RSPCA animal scientist, said: “Every year between 1,000 and 2,000 wild animals are brought into the RSPCA in December, January and February suffering from dehydration, hunger and cold. There are simple ways to make a difference, including maintaining your garden pond and leaving out food and fresh, clean unfrozen water.
“Taking action early really can make the difference to animals.”

Charities plea to homeless during cold snap
EAST Lancashire homeless charities are urging residents to report sightings of people sleeping rough in freezing conditions.
Blackburn-based organisation Nightsafe, at the Boulevard Centre, and Burnley’s branch of Emmaus, Old Hall Street, said they were becoming increasingly concerned for the safety of people without accommodation during the cold snap.
Concerned residents and those in need of accommodation should call 01254 503067 between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday, 01254 672139 out of hours, or visit the Platform 5 centre at the Nightsafe offices.
People in Burnley should call Emmaus on 01282 430860, the Salvation Army on 01282 425588, or Shelter’s on 0808 800 4444.

Gritters working around the clock
THE MET Office has warned that more widespread snow is expected this week, despite a weekend of relative calm.
Lancashire County Council has confirmed its gritters will continue to work through the night after forecasts suggested five to 10cm of snow was possible over the Pennies and East Lancashire. Road temperatures remain below zero for most of the region and drivers have been asked to take care on the roads.
In Blackburn and Darwen, residents were unhappy at the lack of gritting away from the main roads.
Yasar Darez, of Preston New Road, said that while his road was okay, side streets like Leamington Road were extremely difficult to navigate due to a lack of gritting.
There were problems in nearby Gorse Road, off Billinge Avenue, where one resident said drivers were scared to leave their driveway because of severe ice.
Accrington Stanley’s home game against AFC Wimbledon was called off due to a frozen pitch.

Rail passengers should remember that there is a replacement bus service running on Northern Rail today and tomorrow between Blackburn and Blackpool North, and between Preston and Colne due to engineering works.
