East Lancashire MPs give view on possible pay rise
7:00pm Sunday 13th January 2013 in East Lancashire
EAST Lancashire MPs have given the cold shoulder to a survey of their colleagues calling for a one third rise in their pay.
Most are happy with their current £65,738 annual salary while the remainder want to leave the final decision to the Independent Parliamentary Standard Authority (IPSA).
It polled MPs anonymously as part of a consultation on House of Commons wage rates and 69 per cent of the just over 100 of those who replied said they were underpaid. Most wanted to see their renumeration rise by 32 per cent to £86,250.
Earlier this week MPs voted for a one per cent cap on increasing benefits.
Blackburn’s Jack Straw, who has extensive additional earnings on top of his House of Commons salary, said: "At this stage of my life I have no personal interest in a pay rise - for the past 15 years my earnings have been at least twice that of an MPs' salary.
“But I am concerned that MPs generally are paid properly, and their pay keeps pace with comparators - which IPSA's own evidence shows that it has not.
“Otherwise fewer people without means will go into politics and stay the course - and the public will be the loser if that happens.”
Burnley Liberal Democrat Gordon Birtwistle said: “I am not in favour of a pay increase. I am happy with what I have got.”
Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson said: “I think MPs get suitably paid at the moment - more than three times the average wage in the East Lancashire area.”
His Rossendale and Darwen Tory colleague Jake Berry said: “I think MPs are paid adequately. I don’t think it’s the job of MPs to set their own pay and conditions.”
Hyndburn Labour MP Graham Jones refused to answer what level of pay MPs should get as he had answered the anonymous survey, but added: “I am concerned about closing the gap between rich and poor. MPs are at the bottom end of the wealthy.”
Ribble Valley Tory Nigel Evans said: “It is not for MPs to decide how much they get paid. That is a matter for IPSA,”
Lindsay Hoyle, Labour MP for Chorley, said: “I’ve always said that MPs should not set their own salary and I’m glad that IPSA is doing this job properly. We have one chance to get this right and to rebuild trust. However, IPSA must listen to the views of MPs and the public.”
Todmorden Tory Craig Whittaker said: “It is not for MPs to comment on what they get paid. That will be set by IPSA and I will take whatever they decide on the chin.”

though I would comment that -
1 - no other jobs whatsoever .
For Jack Straw to state openly that he earns more "outside" , clearly shows he is not giving 100% to his constituents .
2 - strict rules on expenses .
For example - house "flipping" is made a criminal offence . Claiming your main residence is a spare bedroom in your sister's house likewise. Etc etc.
3 - pensions ? - same as us .
4 - one last point - to my old mate 2for5p . Not personal .
I have a lot of respect for Council employees . Specificaly those who work all hours , emptying the bins for example . Those who are literally as we speak preparing for the snow .
I have no respect whatsoever for those who work for the Council in
diversity coordinaion , statistic preparaton , gender equality , let's
have another meeting - especially when they earn more than MP 's .
I would like my poll tax , rates or whatever it's called now to put Police on the streets . Ensure The Fire Brigade has adequate resources .

Honest.
I believe they are paid a salary that reflects their responsibilities, these people who claim they are not should remember that when they decided to join this profession they knew the salary it commanded, most also have a second salary income and please don't believe they will stop doing that if paid more!,there is also the question of them wanting to keep their final pension when they have voted on reducing every other member of the public sector, once again hypocrites and double standards and they want us to trust them, disgusting.
The annual “corruption index” from Transparency International - which has been published since 1995 - found that Britain had slipped one place to 17th out of 180 countries.
The UK is now more corrupt than countries like Japan, Hong Kong, Luxembourg and Austria. Transparency International gave the UK a Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) score of 7.7. Before 2008, the UK's score had never slipped below 8.
The non-governmental organisation, which is based in Berlin, blamed the poor showing on a collapse in confidence in politicians triggered by The Daily Telegraph’s revelations about MPs’ expenses.
There was also concern about the lingering failure of the UK to prosecute British companies from paying bribes abroad.
A spokesman said it was the UK's lowest score since at least 1998. He added: “Transparency International is concerned that the UK’s CPI score has deteriorated in recent years.
In the MPs' expenses controversy there is plenty to entertain and horrify, but the question that nags away unanswered is a very simple one: how did they feel entitled to make all these claims on the public purse? For a group of politicians who have been meticulously exacting in their calculations of benefit levels or pensions, how on earth did they feel they could extend such largesse to themselves?
The combined Ministerial and Parliamentary salaries for the current Government are:
Prime Minister £142,500; Cabinet Minister £134,565; Minister of State £98,740; Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State £89,435
The number of paid Ministerial posts is limited by law to 109. Any Ministerial appointments in excess of 109 must be unpaid.
A number of Parliamentary office holders also receive supplementary salaries. The Speaker receives a combined salary of £141,504.
Since late 2003, chairs of Select Committees have been entitled to an additional payment on top of their salaries; this is currently £14,582. In 2005 this additional salary was extended to the Chairmen's Panel - a group of around 30 MPs who chair other general Commons committees. Plus ex's.
I think it became us and them or them and us after the ex's scandal broke and that trust won't return untill we have a whole new set of politicians free from any connections to the three main parties. Who all seem to be "in it together" but forgot about us the tax paying voters along the way. "I feel like we have been sold out long ago"..and more and more are waking up to that dreadfull realisation every time they look in their empty kitchen cupboards on top of not being able to afford to get warm in their own homes due to energy EXPENSES.

I do not think 2 for 5p was talking about specific circumstances, most of them 700 people will use benefits, they are not scum, they have paid in to a system. Whilst the word scum is used may not support your views, they must have some experience to support their views.
You will find most of the DWP is 'privatised' as MPs siphon out work to the private sector where they can get more money from the public purse.

How can the public sector workers of today hold the opinion that a person who has survived the second world war who most likely lost loved ones during those dreadfull years be regarded as scum? A retired person cannot be regarded as a sponger you dumb downed morons.
And its obvious to see why our country is so fcuked up because we have morons like 2 for 5p working in the public sector. If I was working in the public sector I would be very worried about working along side a person that thought our clients are scumbags.
Is that how all public sector working see the general public..?
As scumbags.
The bosses at BwD or the LCC had better watch their backs if thats how their employees view the general public.
I will be taking 2 for 5p comments to the town hall with me today to see if we can find out why public sector workers think that the unemployed and retired or just the general public are scumbags according to public sector workers who post on the Lancashire Telegraph site.

As for MPs salaries, it isn't appropriate to set their own salary levels and whilst some public sector workers do earn high salaries the two can't be compared. MPs can claim expenses for second homes, furnishings and employ their own family as staff, plus in the long run they have massive earning potential with books, public appearances, TV programmes. Look at Michael Portilo jollying around the country on trains for the BBC.

Just seems like he is , well let's be kind , somewhat unpleasant .
Hopefully he does not work in Local Government .
Though it would not surprise me if he did . His spelling and punctuation says it all .
I would still like his definition of
