1:38pm Monday 20th June 2011 in Coppull
A memorial tree dedicated to chidren who have died has been damaged after vandals broke into a BMX track in Coppull.
Sometime between 6pm on Friday, June 17 and 9am on Saturday, it is believed that a number of people have entered the grounds of the track on Chisnall Lane.
The group attempted to break into some metal units and caused extensive damage to a tree which had been planted in memory of children from the area who have passed away.
Sgt Matt Lee, from Chorley police, said: “Having visited the damaged tree, it is clear that it had a significant effect on those who use the BMX track for genuine reasons.
“We have recovered a number of items of forensic value from the scene and will be increasing patrols in the area to catch anyone using the site in an appropriate manner.
“I would urge anybody with any information about this incident or anti-social behaviour in general at the track to contact police.”
PCSO Julie Belshaw said: “Whoever has done this has caused irreversible damage to the tree.
“The people who did this may think it’s just another tree, but the damaged caused will have a devastating effect on the families that use it as place to reflect on their loss.”
Anybody with any information is asked to call police on 08451 25 35 45.
