Coppull fire: Man treated for 'severe burns'

A man in his 30s is being treated in hospital for ‘severe burns’ after a fire struck at a Coppull breakers yard.

Fire crews were called to Blainscough Lane yesterday morning after reports of explosions and a building on fire.

The man was taken away by ambulance and is now being treated in the burns unit at Whiston Hospital, Merseyside.

Concerns over possible hazardous materials at the premises meant that police declared a 200m exclusion zone around the area until this morning because there were gas welding cylinders on the site.

Firefighters spent Thursday afternoon directing jets of water on to the area to extinguish the flames and cool the cylinders down.

Police and fire officers have begun an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Lancashire Fire and rescue said the single storey building contained a car in a workshop and acetylene cylinders.

Six fire appliances and special vehicles including a hazardous materials unit and a mobile fire station were mobilised at the scene as the fire was deemed a major incident.
