THE Mayor of Chorley will be taking an enforced break from her civic duties as she recovers from illness.
Coun Pat Case was rushed to hospital last week and will have to take a few weeks’ rest while she recovers.
She was given pain relief treatment before surgery at the spinal unit in the Salford Royal Infirmary to treat a nerve problem.
She is expected to be allowed home within a few days of her surgery, which is expected to take place at the beginning of next week.
The Deputy Mayor, Coun June Molyneaux, will attend events and ceremonies in her place while Chorley’s first citizen regains her health.
“I’m desperately sad to be having to take a break in my mayoral duties because I have been enjoying the role immensely, but I’m looking forward to resuming my role as soon as possible,” said the Mayor.
Coun Case, 79, became Mayor in May and has been a Chorley councillor for 19 years.
Before Christmas, she successfully concluded a month’s radiotherapy at the Rosemere Unit, in Preston, to treat throat cancer.
“The treatment before Christmas meant I had a temporary voice loss – exactly what a politician doesn’t need,” she joked.
“I visited many groups during the treatment with a husky voice and they were all amused by the predicament, showing the sense of humour of Chorley’s residents and it was good to be able to joke about it.
I am particularly disappointed that I may not be able to welcome people personally to the Home Start Trust Ball, which is one of Chorley’s major charities, and really hope it gets the support it deserves.
“I know Coun Molyneaux will do a great job in my absence and she will be attending all the events where possible.”
