3:03pm Tuesday 17th August 2010

Police have branded a racist attack on two bus passengers in Chorley as “disgusting”.

The victims, a man and a woman, were spat at, punched and kicked by two women after being on the end of a “sustained verbal attack”.

The suspects are now being sought by police after the women fled the scene at Chorley Interchange, Clifford Street, leaving their victims shaken and distressed.

The incident happened on the 126 Stagecoach bus from Preston to Chorley, at around 5.25pm on Monday, August 9.

A pair of Venezualan nationals were speaking to each other in Spanish on the bus when they were targeted by the women.

Sgt Sonia Spencer, from Chorley’s neighbourhood policing team, said: “They were the subject of verbal taunts about immigration and the colour of their skin during the 30 minute journey.

“When the bus arrived in Chorley and the man said something to the women, he was spat at by one of the suspects which struck him on the head before being punched and kicked.”

The two women fled when another passenger intervened.

The women, who are suspected of racially aggravated assault, are both described as around 5ft 6in tall.

One of them is described as slim with straight black hair, she was wearing light blue jeans and a white jacket.

The other had an auburn pony tail and was wearing dark jeans, a black jacket and top and had a bright pink handbag.

“This was a sustained assault on two innocent people merely talking on a bus,” added Sgt Spencer.

“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the attack or who may know who the suspects are.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Chorley police on 01257 246225.
