Attendances soar at Chorley pools

FREE swim sessions at Chorley’s two pools have seen attendances soar since being launched last April.

Figures for the first nine months of the two year scheme, which offers free swimming to the under 16s and over 60s, show an increase of 50 per cent on the same period the previous year – and all the indications are that its success will continue.

Chorley Council’s two pools, All Seasons Leisure Centre and Brinscall Pool, report figures of 117,348 in the first nine months of the scheme, up from 78,209 for the same period in 2008.

Councillor John Walker, Chorley Council’s Executive Member (People) said: “We are delighted so many people have taken up the chance of free swimming at our pools, I can’t emphasise enough the health benefits that swimming provides.

“And we hope to see even more people take advantage of the free swim sessions because, as it is a two-year project, we are totally committed to it for the forthcoming year 2010/11.

“It is a prime example of partnership working for the benefit of our residents.”

Across both centres, adult swims increased by 51.70 per cent in 2009/10 on the same period the previous year, from 48,833 swims to 74,088 and junior swims increased by around 47.30 per cent from 29,376 to 43,260.

Whilst free swims account for the majority of the increase, the number of paid for swims have also increased during this last year by 6.90 per cent.
