Chorley dance day proves a hit

From traditional clog dancing and tap dancing to African and Asian dance, there was something for everyone at a day of dance held at Chorley Town Hall.

The event was a joint venture between Chorley Council’s Active Generation project, aimed at getting the over 50s more active, and the charity, Help the Aged, to use dance to help improve balance among older people as part of a Falls Awareness Campaign.

All 50 places were snapped up by men and women from across Chorley borough with others from Wigan, Blackburn and Burnley and they enjoyed graceful Asian dance, tap dance cabaret style, belly dancing, African rhythm dancing and traditional clog dancing in the Lancastrian suite.

The practical workshops led by local experts Miso’shi for African dance, Cathy Hurley for cabaret, Alex Fisher for clog dancing, Sue Green for Egyptian dance and Bisakha Sarker with Chris Davies on flute and drum for Indian dance.

The Mayor of Chorley, councillor Iris Smith took part in the cabaret session and was so impressed she came back later, without her chain of office, to join in the Egyptian dance.

Councillor John Walker, Chorley Council’s Executive Member (People) said: “It was a fantastic day for everyone who took part.

“They learnt completely new dance routines in each 45 minute session, thanks to the expertise of our professionals. Each artiste uses the basis of national dance to develop the sense of balance in older people.

“And the feedback we got from everyone on the day was extremely positive."
