Chorley's Laura Massaro mixes with sporting royalty at Wimbledon
Updated 4:09pm Wednesday 2nd July 2014 in Chorley
Laura Massaro said it was a day to remember as she mixed with sporting royalty at Wimbledon’s Centre Court on Saturday.
The current world squash champion took her place in the Royal Box with sporting greats including David Beckham and Sir Bradley Wiggins.
And Massaro admitted the nerves kicked in on the world’s most famous tennis court.
The world number two from Chorley was introduced to a packed centre court crowd who had gathered to see Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova in action.
“I was pretty nervous to be honest,” said Massaro after Sue Barker had introduced her on the Wimbledon showpiece court.
“Standing up in front of so many people on Centre Court was quite daunting. I’m normally alright when it comes to being on TV and public appearances but this was a little bit different.”
Massaro and husband Danny were among athletes and their guests who were the leaders in their particular sport and she said it was a honour to be there.
“It was a real privilege and an honour,” she said. “Someone mentioned that you have to earn the right to be in the Royal Box, so it was lovely to be able to take my place alongside some many talented sportsmen and women.
“It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences really.”
With that being the case, Massaro didn’t waste the opportunity to have her photograph taken with former England captain Beckham.
“As you would expect, everyone wanted to talk to him or have their photo taken with him,” added Massaro.
“But he was great and happy to do so. I had a quick chat with him and was very polite and seemed a very genuine person.”
