South Ribble Tennis and Fitness Centre is set to serve up 20 years as a top sporting facility in the borough.

And to celebrate the impressive milestone, free tennis sessions are to be held on June 29 to coincide with the Great British Tennis Week and Wimbledon.

The free sessions will include indoor tennis, mini tennis, touch tennis and cardio tennis.

The centre officially opened on August 19, 1994, and boasts seven indoor tennis courts and four floodlit outdoor courts.

It is home to the Penwortham, Chorley and Goosnargh Tennis Clubs and is the training venue of choice for Paralympian Jamie Burdekin and professional player Imran Aswat.

The building has been transformed over the years with an extension and the creation of three different gym areas and new badminton courts.

A spokesman for South Ribble Community Leisure, which runs the centre on behalf of the council, said: “The tennis and fitness centre is an incredibly popular facility right at the heart of the borough. We offer specialist coaching for beginners to world ranked professional tennis players.

“We’re also committed to nurturing the talents of our younger generations and offer classes from the age of three that are really affordable.

“On top of the impressive sporting facilities, we also have a café, conference area and an extensive catering menu and are located close to all major motorway networks – making the centre a great place to do business too.”

Rackets and tennis balls will be provided for the free sessions. Advanced booking is recommended by calling: 01772 620421. You can also find out more about the centre by visiting www.southribbleleisure.com.
