Chorley tax fraud checks to be run

3:30pm Wednesday 18th December 2013

People living in Chorley are being urged to make sure their electoral records are up-to-date as a data matching exercise is about to take place to help stop fraud.

The council takes part in the National Fraud Initiative (NFI) managed by the Audit Commission every year to ensure that public money is spent properly.

Data matching is aimed at verifying council tax discounts for single-person households and so the council will be providing council tax records, and the full Electoral Register, to the commission.

Coun Peter Wilson, who oversees council tax for Chorley Council, said: “The information will then be checked and we’ll be told if any cases need further investigation.

“This could be, for example, where someone is claiming a single person discount but the electoral register states they are not living alone.

“Discrepancies can happen because our records are not up to date, so it’s vital that people contact us if they know the information the council holds about them is wrong, or if there’s been any change in their circumstances.

To check your records are up to date contact the council on 01257 515151 or email contact@chorley. gov.uk.
