10:43am Wednesday 28th August 2013 in Chorley
A man has died after falling from a bridge on to the M61 near Chorley.
The man, who police believe is in his 50s, was not struck by any vehicles in the incident which happened at around 9.50am last Thursday.
He died in hospital on Monday evening at 10pm.
It is thought he fell off the bridge in Babylon Lane, Heath Charnock, between junctions six and eight of the northbound carriageway.
Sergeant Malcolm Bell, from Lancashire Police’s road policing unit, said: “An investigation is now under way.
“If anybody saw this man on the bridge prior to him falling then I would urge them to contact police.
“I would also like to speak with anybody who may have seen this man fall.”
A crew from the North West Air Ambulance was called and the injured man was transferred to Royal Preston Hospital.
Lanes one and two of the motorway remained closed until 11.10am, causing delays of up to one hour for drivers.
The Highways Agency said normal traffic conditions resumed at around 1.30pm.
